Burgund

Burgund (pronounced “BER-kun” by natives) was settled back in the Bronze Age, during the Jeraldic Period, and its people once spoke its own dialect of Common and had its own distinct culture. Sadly, both its language and its unique customs are close to extinct today. They have been slowly eroded by immigration from the North, persecution during the Darkness and, more recently, attacks from Tavakians to the East, who destroyed the traditional Bergund capital of Casht in Year 81, severing a precious link to the Burgundian past.

Burgund was the only one of the Five Kingdoms to join the Awrgawn Empire voluntarily, and because of this it has special privileges. It is a Grand Duchy (the other old kingdoms are just Duchies); its highest priest is a Prelate instead of an Arch Bishop; it was allowed to keep its old order of knighthood, the Order of the Red Plume; and most importantly, each Lord Protector vows, in a public ceremony after coronation, to respect Burgundian traditions and its ancient way of life.
